Swordtember 1: Eclipse Blade

I thought it would be fun to try one of these inktober spinoffs, but doing homebrew instead! We’ll see how capable I am of keeping up with this amount of work every day for 30 days, but I’m feeling pretty okay right now!

The first prompt was “Shadow“ which I interpreted as something unseen, rather than explicit darkness.

Eclipse Blade

Weapon (Longsword), Rare (requires attunement)

This magic weapon appears as a simple sword handle with no blade attached. Once attuned to, an invisible and nearly weightless blade is revealed when it is used to strike. Treat the katana as a longsword with a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls and the finesse property.

You have advantage on attacks made with the katana while the blade is invisible. On a hit while the blade is invisible, the katana becomes visible. While the blade is visible, roll a d6 at the start of your turn. If you roll a 6, the blade becomes invisible again.

If a creature has not seen you hit with an attack using the katana while it is invisible before (and cannot see through illusions), then so long as they can see you when you make your first attack you can roll a deception check contested against their insight. If you succeed and the attack hits them, the attack is an automatic critical.
