Swordtember 8: Drowner’s Cutlass

A pirate sword with a curse that just might be worth the trouble.

Swordtember 8, today’s prompt was “anchor.“ Not a lot of interesting ways to take anchor that didn’t just have an anchor present, but what are you gonna do. I can’t always be clever! I am pretty happy with the features of the blade though, as well as how it ended up looking visually.

Drowner’s Cutlass

Weapon (Longsword), Very Rare (Requires Attunement)

This cutlass is embellished with a gold handle and a skull pommel. Attached to the pommel is a rope which is bound to an equally exquisite anchor. The cutlass acts as a longsword that lacks the versatile weapon property and gains a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls. You do not make attacks at disadvantage with this cutlass when engaging in underwater combat.

A creature who is not attuned to the cutlass treats the anchor as if it is under the effects of an Immovable Object spell (DC 30). As the attuned creature, you can pick up the anchor in one hand with some effort or tie it to your person, halving your speed. While you carry the anchor, you add twice your proficiency bonus on checks and saves to resist being knocked prone or moved against your will.

While the anchor is on the ground, you cannot be moved more than 30 feet away from it. The rope instantly repairs and reattaches itself if damaged, however, a creature bound by the rope can escape normally by severing the rope if they move quickly.

Curse: This weapon is cursed, and attuning it extends the curse to you. If you enter water while holding the anchor, you descend at a rate of 60 feet per round until you reach the floor of the body of water. You can not benefit from any spell or ability that grants you a fly speed while holding the anchor. Until the curse is broken with a Remove Curse spell or similar magic, you are unwilling to part with the weapon.
